United Auburn Indian Community Tribal School

Santa Francisco, CA

Building on the recently completed campus and community center,Plural is transforming a former irrigation pond on the campus of the UAIC Tribal School into a learning landscape and tribal resource. By recontouring the pond, we create shelves along the banks that host native plants and support wildlife. In addition, a pier and boat launch invite tribal members to fish, row, and study the ecology of this unique campus resource. The plantings not only provide ecological services, but they also become an ethno-botanical garden, providing materials for the Tribe to weave baskets and build canoes. The palette is also comprised of plants used in the Tribe’s culinary, medicinal, and ritual practices. The campus and pond transform a former orchard into a community center for the Tribe, restoring the native landscape and enabling future generations of the Tribe to learn and cultivate their traditions.
