East Palo Alto, CA

With many gardens, tree groves and community gathering spaces, the landscape design for this affordable housing project is inspired by the EPA’s history and pride in gardening and land stewardship. The proposal includes a large community courtyard in the center of the project with play elements and group BBQ facilities, and smaller gathering spaces for enjoying EPA’s good weather and company.

The project is anchored along the north by a decommissioned Rail Spur. The Rail Spur will be transformed into a multi-use walk and bike trail that connects the community to the bay and the Bay Trail. Two publicly accessible paths on either side of the project help to connect neighbors to the trail.

A diverse palette of trees and under-story plantings build on the surrounding neighborhood’s character. Many of the trees proposed were selected for their current success growing in this neighborhood. The landscape is designed to be resilient and beautiful, with low maintenance, low water use, drought tolerant plants, and integrated stormwater gardens.
